A Taste of Melbourne on the Gold Coast
Yesterday Heidi and I attended the VIP opening of Harbourside Markets at Biggerra Waters on the Gold Coast.
We have both been involved in the creation of the vision of the owners, Rick and Amanda Casagrande, to create a quality food offering on the Gold Coast. Harbourside Markets after two years in the making is the result of the efforts of many people. They have brought a taste of the Melbourne food scene to the Gold Coast offering quality and gourmet food.

Heidi and I were involved in the design of one of the tenancies – Chocolatto Coffee + Chocolate. It is a coffee and chocolate food lover’s paradise with a bright and relaxed ambience and a large picture window where you can sit on the upholstered lounge and enjoy the fresh air and sunlight. If you visit some day make sure you try the mocha served in a glass – they are to dine for. The chocolates are made by legendary Arno Backes of Melbourne’s Ganache Chocolate on Lygon Street and will leave you smiling.
It’s About Creating a Sensual Experience
Within Harbourside Markets are tenancies selling fresh, and exciting produce with a point of difference. From a butcher selling rare and specialty gourmet meats such as venison, spatchcock and quail, kangaroo, and wagu beef toa delicatessen selling the finest local and imported produce. The Gusto Deli even has its own cheese room with a vast array of cheeses.
One thing that stood out at the VIP Opening was that the Gold Coast sorely needed this gourmet food experience. It also reinforced my belief that in these tough economic times customers will pay for premium given the choice of having an experience and a superior quality product over a cheap and nasty same old offering. Customers are crying out even more for an ‘escape’ from their every day lives and they are willing to pay for it. They are after experience and quality and will forgo something else to satisfy their emotional needs.
What’s Your POD?
That is why it is more important than ever for gift retailers to step up and provide a point of difference. Gifting is a personal and highly charged experience. Finding that perfect gift that is different to what everyone else is supplying is more important than ever. It is those retailers who play it too safe and don’t offer gifts and greeting cards that are not the norm that will more than likely find it difficult. The aim is to not compete on the same level as your competitors but to enter a playing field where there is fewer players. That playing field is to provide an experience for your customers not just sell the stuff. An experience involves stocking quality products that are different to what’s out there.
