1. Set High Goals
To keep you motivated over the long term set yourself a goal that can keep you motivated. Often the bigger goals can provide the inspiration and fuel to keep us moving towards our goal. BHAG, or Big Hairy Audacious Goals can be powerful motivators. Set a strong ‘why’ intention and this will help you find the ‘how’ to get there. Where you set your intention you will put attention.
2. Remember To Live Now
Don’t burn yourself out trying to get there and forget about the now. The experiences, people and knowledge you gain along the way making achieving success that much sweeter. Imagine reaching your destination and poor health, feeling miserable and having burnt your bridges along the way. Remember to enjoy the journey.
3. Bless Each Day
Each day find something to be grateful for. Gratitude is a mighty motivator. When we are grateful for things, people and events in our lives now, well, we feel great. Greatness leads to greater things.
4. Take Little Steps Daily
Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by ‘how’ you are going to get there. Begin by visualising your destination and then take steps back from that incredible moment. You may map out that you need to take five major ‘legs’ to your journey, and those individual ‘legs’ may require many steps which you can also map out. Without knowing where you are going, having a clear road map and daily taking steps towards your goal, few people reach their destination.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzu
Chinese philospher (604 BC – 531 BC)
Along your journey to success you may encounter road blocks. Rather than give up, be creative. Find ways to go around, climb over, tunnel under, smash through. Road blocks test our mettle and our determination to succeed.
7. Be Open To Change
Life is a journey and rarely do we go from ‘B’ to ‘D’, from Birth to Death in a straight line. Similarly, goals can take the roads less travelled. In fact some roads can turn into goat tracks and lead us into really unfamiliar territory. Don’t give up when you are feeling overwhelmed or can’t find your way forward. Being out of your comfort zone means you are heading towards a breakthrough.
8. Be Open To Grace
Don’t try to force things in happening. Put out your intentions, take action, and leave the rest to Grace. She’s very kind to those who trust in her. She may get you to your destination in ways you hadn’t imagined. She may also leave you short or change your destination – she knows what you really need.
Find yourself a mentor that have walked the walk you are about to take. Study famous people who have achieved great dreams. Understand who they had to become to be great. It may be about changing your attitude, expectations, what you value. It may be about learning to get ‘out there’ and network. Speaking on a regular basis to your mentor will help you to avoid common pitfalls along your journey and offer you support or advice if need be.
10. Check In
Check in regularly to see where you are and what steps you need to take to reach your success. What are some of the lessons you have learned so far? What are some of the road blocks you envision moving forward? Who have you met that have changed your way of seeing things? Sometimes by checking in we can see just how far we have come and the perspective others can offer us can make us realise that we may be closer to success than we realised.
Yes, celebrate! Remember to celebrate those little wins, those milestones along the way. Champagne may give you wobbly legs but remember to celebrate the legs of your journey. In fact, celebrate daily your effort (I am not championing drinking alcohol daily). Celebrate in little ways.
This list is nowhere near exhaustive, but will provide a launch pad to reaching your dreams. Be open to change and by aiming high and taking action, even if you don’t reach the stars, if you make it half way, because you’ve enjoyed the journey, well then, you’ll be over the moon.#achieving your dreams #goal setting #success
